Free Help for Community AssociationsPRNewswireALEXANDRIA, Va.Oct. 27

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A national nonprofit group has launched a free, online learning program to help homeowner and condominium associations avoid mistakes and missteps than can lead to dissention, financial trouble and even costly litigation.

Developed by Community Associations Institute (CAI), Board Member Basics provides information, perspective and best practices that can help association board members lead their communities effectively and responsibly.

More than 60 million Americans live in an estimated 300,000 associations. Almost two million homeowners serve on the elected boards that govern these communities.

The six-part curriculum is ideal for current association board and committee members, those who aspire to community leadership positions and residents who want to understand how associations can and should function. The information includes a model code of ethics for association board members, governance guidelines and 42 rights and responsibilities applicable to leaders and homeowners in virtually any association-governed community.

"Many associations, not to mention individual homeowners, face difficult challenges, especially in this economic climate," says Thomas M. Skiba, CAE, CAI's chief executive officer. "The volunteers who lead these communities need practical guidance and support so they can avoid common problems. This education program will help them provide strong leadership and make prudent decisions on behalf of their residents."

Board Member Basics can be accessed at www.caionline.org.

CAI and its 58 state and regional chapters provide education, tools and resources for community association board members, community managers and other professionals who support common-interest communities. Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., CAI has almost 30,000 members nationally.
