Dr. Helene Gayle Rallies Support for Administration's Focus on Gender, Nutrition, Flexibility

WHAT: CARE President and CEO Dr. Helene Gayle testifies on the Obama Administration's recently released strategy on Food Security during a hearing of the House Subcommittee on Africa and Global Health. The hearing, "A Call to Action on Food Security: A Progress Report on the Administration's Global Strategy," also will feature testimony from the U.S. Government Accountability Office, the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa, and Friends of the World Food Program.
WHY: Earlier this month, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced that the number of hungry people around the world has eclipsed 1 billion. The historic levels underscore the importance of the administration's GlobalHunger and Food Security Initiative, released last month. The document reflects positions long advocated by CARE and represent a real breakthrough in the fight to combat chronic hunger. Dr. Gayle will stress that we cannot squander this opportunity to get right our fight against hunger. She will ask Congress to support the administration and pass legislation that:
1. Focuses on the role of women, who account for the majority of the
developing world's farmers but who often have limited access to
agricultural inputs, financial services and land ownership.
2. Addresses underlying causes of poor nutrition, which includes confronting
barriers to food access and health care, lower female education status
and gender inequality.
3. Increases the impact and efficiency of food assistance by assuring
adequate flexibility and social safety nets.
Dr. Gayle will call on representatives to take action on the Global Food Security Act (HR 3077) and the Roadmap to End Global Hunger Act (HR 2817).
