Human Relations Commission Orders Furniture Surplus to Pay $7,588 in Racial Discrimination CasePRNewswireHARRISBURG, Pa.Oct. 27

HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 27 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission has ordered Furniture Surplus, a.k.a. Furniture Sir Plus, of Philadelphia, to pay former employee Paul Holmes, also of Philadelphia, $7,588 for racial discrimination.

"Pennsylvania law requires businesses to treat their employees the same regardless of race," Chairperson Stephen A. Glassman said. "And if an employee files a complaint against them, they are legally obligated to respond or risk being found liable for unlawful discrimination."

The commission found Furniture Surplus liable for unlawful racial discrimination in terminating Holmes, and ordered the business to:

-- Cease and desist discriminating against employees because of their race; -- Pay Holmes $7,488 in lost wages following his termination, plus six percent per annum from January 24, 2008 until payment is made; and -- Pay Holmes $100 in expenses.

Furniture Surplus has 30 days to report to the commission on how it will comply with the order.
