Statement of Support - Re: Appropriation for International Food Protection InstitutePRNewswireBATTLE CREEK, Mich.Oct. 12

BATTLE CREEK, Mich., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following statement can be attributed to Sterling K. Speirn, president and CEO of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation:

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation is encouraged by the $1 million appropriation on its way to President Obama's desk for the International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI). It has the potential to become a world-class center for food safety, research and the food sciences by providing rigorous training for food safety inspectors nationwide. It also is a strong vote of confidence for the people of Battle Creek and the food leadership legacy that exists in this region.

The commitment of private and public sector resources has been -- and will continue to be -- fundamental to the success of this effort. Several Michigan legislators -- Reps. Mark Schauer and Fred Upton and Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin -- have worked in partnership with business, academic institutions, private foundations and other entities to usher this new level of food focus into the southwest Michigan.

We're pleased that the W.K. Kellogg Foundation investment commitment of $35 million for Battle Creek revitalization specifically included an allocation of $2 million for the creation of the Institute, is catalyzing additional investment. In addition to the economic opportunities created by the IFPTI, the Kellogg Foundation particularly supports the fact that better trained inspectors will help safeguard the national food supply -- protecting the health and well-being of the nation's children and families -- while bringing new opportunities to the area for education, learning, internships, research, and employment.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation, established in 1930, supports children, families and communities as they strengthen and create conditions that propel vulnerable children to achieve success as individuals and as contributors to the larger community and society. Grants are concentrated in the United States, southern Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean.
