Mike Turner, Virginia Congressional Candidate, Starts Healthcare Countdown

PURCELLVILLE, Va., May 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Retired Air Force Colonel Mike Turner, a Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in Virginia's 10th District, has started a "Health Care Countdown" inspired by MSNBC host Keith Olbermann. Today is the 169th day since Professor Judy Feder, Turner's Primary opponent and a key architect of Hillary Clinton's notorious 1993 health care plan, started her campaign -- and she still refuses to tell 10th District voters what, if any, plan she has to provide universal health care to Americans. As Feder remains silent on specifics, the countdown to the June 10th Primary -- 32 days -- continues.

Turner, the only candidate in this Congressional race who has offered a plan to provide universal health care, expressed his disappointment once again concerning his opponent's surprising reluctance to offer a detailed proposal of her own, even when recently challenged at a Loudoun County Democratic Committee meeting on April 23rd and at a debate in Fauquier County on May 4th.

"The shallowness of poll-tested politics should be behind us," Turner said. "For my opponent to hide behind a homogenized position with no specifics on what ought to be her signature issue indicates that she isn't interested in moving the 10th District forward. This illustrates the apparent willingness of the Feder campaign to practice the Washington insider style politics of yesterday that devotes all its efforts to raising money while abandoning leadership and avoiding substance. Frankly, the voters deserve much better.

"Like Senator Barack Obama, I believe every candidate owes the voters a principled and clearly articulated stand on the urgent issues. Feder's approach is unacceptable. She has not endorsed Clinton's plan, Obama's plan, the single-payer model described in pending legislation, or any other plan."

Turner has publicly endorsed HR 676, legislation introduced by Congressman John Conyers (D-MI), co-sponsored by 91 Members of Congress, and endorsed by 59 percent of America's physicians, which will provide true universal coverage with equal or better quality and lower costs.

"If we are serious about having universal health care, a Single-payer system is the only practical solution," says Turner. "Since we're going to have to fight the insurance companies for any new plan, why not fight them for the best solution for all Americans?"
