Major military operation under way in Afghanistan

Pakistan moves troops to Afghan border
ISLAMABAD (AP) - Pakistan's army say it has deployed troops to a stretch of the Afghan border to stop Taliban fleeing a major U.S. offensive in southern Afghanistan. Spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said Thursday the army was preparing for a possible movement of Taliban across the border from Afghanistan's Helmand province.

US: American soldier captured in Afghanistan
KABUL (AP) - US military spokeswoman says insurgents have captured an American soldier in eastern Afghanistan. Capt. Elizabeth Mathias said the soldier has been missing since Tuesday. She said she could not provide further information. Mathias said the military was using "all our resources to find him and provide for his safe return."

12 militants killed in Afghan airstrike
KABUL (AP) - The U.S.-led coalition says airstrikes have killed over a dozen militants allegedly involved in the movement of foreign fighters into Afghanistan from Pakistan. The coalition said in a statement Tuesday that the strikes targeted insurgents linked to a militant leader Siraj Haqqani in eastern Khost province.

Afghan minister seeks end to private 'militias'
By NOOR KHAN Associated Press Writer KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (AP) - Afghanistan's interior minister called Tuesday for the disbanding of private security forces after a group of guards that has worked for the U.S. military was involved in the killing of a provincial police chief in the country's south.
