Small SUVs improve in crash tests
By KEN THOMAS Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Four small sport utility vehicles received top scores in crash tests to be released Wednesday by the insurance industry, a sign of improvement compared with SUVs built earlier in the decade.

Plane swerves off runway at Madrid airport
MADRID, Spain (AP) - An airliner bound for the Canary Islands swerved off the runway while departing from Madrid airport Wednesday, Spain's national airport authority said. No information on casualties was immediately available. Television footage showed thick, white smoke rising from the scene.

Jury finds ranch negligent in 10-death landslide
VENTURA, Calif. (AP) - A jury has ruled that a ranch company's negligence helped lead to the 2005 landslide that killed 10 people in a community on California's central coast. The slide destroyed 13 homes and damaged 23 others in the seaside community of La Conchita 70 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Searchers say all missing in Grand Canyon located
By CHRIS KAHN Associated Press Writer PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say they have accounted for a handful of hikers who were missing after flooding struck a remote part of the Grand Canyon.

Weather alert radios being sent to schools
WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal agencies are distributing 182,000 public alert radios to schools across the country. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the current effort will provide the radios to preschools, Head Start programs, school district offices and nonpublic schools and offices.
