Georgia Tech University

To err is human. However, if you're a Georgia Tech lineman, it appears that erring also means that you are going to get beaten like a rented mule. Seems that 315-pound Dustin Vaitekunas missed a blocking assignment during a routine practice. Coach George O' Leary then decided to teach Vaitekunas a heavy lesson. Claiming he wanted Vaitekunas to "get an idea of how a quarterback feels when his blockers miss their assignments," Coach O' Leary had four blockers rush him as he stood in place. Vaitekunas got leveled. In fact, two Yugos probably would have done less damage. The lineman was left on the ground, dazed and gasping for air.

Notes to Coach O'Leary:

1) The days of being able to beat the stuffing out of your own players are long past. Now only the players are allowed to beat up anyone they choose.

2) You wanted to give Vaitekunas an idea of how the QB feels? George…come on! The QB can at least run for his life or the sideline-whichever is more convenient. You know as well as I do that usually a four-lineman sack is pretty rare.

All of this seems particularly heinous, when you consider the fact that Georgia Tech doesn't tackle its own quarterbacks in practice! Anyway, Vaitekunas has since left the team. His mom is beating the lawsuit drum loudly, claiming that O'Leary tried to "kill her son." The university has so far declined to discipline O'Leary, who claims that he didn't properly tell his team how he wanted them to conduct the exercise. Nonetheless, the Yellow Jackets, finding themselves amid a swarm of tarnish at #11, are climbing steadily toward the tarnished elite.
